Djokovic, Federer Aim To Continue Indian Wells Dominance

Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer are the two most prolific players in the history of the BNP Paribas Open, with the Serbian earning a record five titles and the Swiss star holding the winner’s trophy four times. With Federer riding the high of his 18th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open and Djokovic holding an 18-match win streak in the desert, both are looking to continue their dominance in Indian Wells for different reasons.
With a 46-6 career record, World No. 2 Djokovic and Indian Wells have proven to be a perfect match almost from the start. The Serbian finished runner-up in his second attempt in 2007 and has prevailed five times (2008, 2011, 2014-2016). Djokovic has made it to at least the semi-finals every year since 2011.
“Players are very welcomed here,” said Djokovic after winning the title last year. “The spectators are sharing their love and passion for the sport with us, and in that kind of environment you are obviously inspired to play your very best.”
Djokovic is also eyeing two significant milestones in Indian Wells.Two victories this year would see him reach 300 match wins at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 level and also see him join Pete Sampras (762 tour-level wins) in a tie for 10th place in the list of most wins in the Open Era.

Knee surgery last year forced Federer to miss Indian Wells after 15 consecutive main draw appearances in the desert. The Swiss Maestro is 52-11 here, winning four times (2004-2006, 2012) and finishing runner-up twice (2014, 2015). Federer has reached the quarter-finals or better in his past five appearances.
“Just waking up in the morning and seeing the blue skies every time, it’s really nice here,” said Federer in 2004. “The people who are here, they come to the tennis. A lot of people recognise me here. It’s different here somehow than the reactions in Switzerland. So much louder.”
For both players, leaving Indian Wells as the last man standing has been an omen for a fruitful remainder of their season. Federer completed the Indian Wells-Miami double in 2005 and 2006, and finished as year-end No. 1 in three of the years he won Indian Wells (2004-2006). Meanwhile, Djokovic has completed the Indian Wells-Miami double a staggering four times (2011, 2014-2016) and finished as year-end No. 1 in three of the years he prevailed at this event (2011, 2014-2015).
Djokovic just slightly leads his FedEx ATP Head2Head against Federer 23-22, but their record at Indian Wells is far more one-sided. The World No. 2 has won all three matches they’ve played, emerging victorious in the 2011 semi-finals and 2014 and 2015 finals, but Federer pushed each match to a deciding set. The players have played more than 100 matches at Indian Wells, but it’s their 2014 final that fittingly might be their most memorable match here, with Djokovic taking the title 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(3).
Federer and Djokovic haven’t faced off since the Serbian prevailed in their 2016 Australian Open semi-final, so a renewal of their historic rivalry at Indian Wells would undoubtedly be a match that fans worldwide would clamour to see.

Znowu mamy w 1. rundzie powtórkę ze spotkania w ostatniej rundzie kwalifikacji (Ymer - Nishioka, niedawno Istomin - Bedene). Pamiętając o rozstawieniu Japończyka w eliminacjach warto teraz rzucić groszem na niego, pewnie celowo oddal ostatni mecz.

Barty, Nishioka za Raona czy co? Ktoś jeszcze się wycofał?

Jeszcze raz rzut oka na imponujący kompleks Indian Wells. Oni chyba nie mają takich problemów z brakiem metrów kwadratowych jak w Paryżu.

Gdyby RG odbywało się na pustyni, a nie było wciśnięte w szereg ulic i uliczek, to nie dusiłoby się w obecnych ramach przestrzennych. Zostawmy Paryż. Bardziej adekwatne jest porównanie z Miami, gdzie z roku na rok jest podobno coraz gorzej, na wszystkim się oszczędza, tenisiści narzekają na małą liczbę kortów do treningu i gdzie rozbudowie sprzeciwiają się ekolodzy, bo to Key Biscane. Tych wysp aż do Key West jest zresztą cały łańcuch, a kto miał okazję jechać autostradą (wybudowaną na palach wbitych w ocean), które je łączą, ten wie, że to niesamowite przeżycie. W Indian Wells wszystko zmieniło się, gdy Charlie Pasarell, który w ogóle wymyślił tenis na pustyni, wciągnął w ten projekt dobrze nam znanego Larry’ego Ellisona, szefa Oracle. Bardzo szybko rozbudowano kompleks, zainstalowano na wszystkich kortach hawk eye, a chyba w 2014 roku po raz pierwszy w tenisie zastosowano system powtórek wyjęty żywcem z Matrixa (chodzi o tzw. FreeD). Dlatego dziś wiele nagród trafia do Indian Wells. A kiedyś było zupełnie inaczej i większy prestiż (zwłaszcza na początku gdy AO rozgrywano jeszcze w grudniu, czyniąc Miami pierwszym wielkim turniejem w sezonie) i lepszą organizację miało Miami. Ze wszystkich Mastersów największy regres zaliczyło więc Miami, a najbardziej do przodu poszło IW. Prawdziwa perła bardziej zasługująca na miano piątego Szlema niż Miami.

Na MTF-ie piszą, że Gasquet, ale to nie może być prawdą, ponieważ Francuza nie było już w I wersji drabinki, w której na obecnym LL był Q.

Także nie mam pojęcia.

Sprawdziłem, jakie jest prawdopodobieństwo wylosowania w dwóch turniejach dwóch tych samych rywali po kolei (w przypadku Djokovicia Del Potro i Kyrgiosa). Wynosi ono 1/3072.

Nie widziałem nigdy tak nierówno rozlosowanej drabinki, co otwiera pozostałe ćwiartki (może poza tą Murraya), ale z punktu widzenia organizatorów zawsze lepiej mieć kilka bliskich potencjalnych hitów niż dwa albo jeden w finale. Do tej pory Djoković, Nadal i Federer lądowali najwyżej w jednej połówce (w Rzymie). I tak oto można przejść od dyskusji, czy jakakolwiek drabinka może być trudna dla Djokovicia, kiedy ten wygrywał wszystko, do drugiego losowania z rzędu, które zapowiada ciężką harówę. Wygląda na to, że Murray może nie mieć tu lepszej szansy. Co prawda balansował w Dubaju na krawędzi i z jakichś przyczyn nie czuł się nigdy komfortowo w IW, ale zdaje się, że zregenerował się po AO, które było pierwszym ważnym turniejem po sezonie, gdzie do samego końca walczył o numer jeden, i ciężkim okresie przygotowawczym, i może Indian Wells tak jak Dubaj dołączy do grona turniejów, w których zwyciężyła cała czwórka.

Racja. Gasquet pewnie się wycofał tuż przed losowaniem. Raona można było zastąpić, bo kolejny na liście był PR Dmitrij Tursunow (nie zgłosił się do kwali), a w przypadku Francuza nie było to już takie łatwe, bo kolejny z listy rezerwowej pewnie był już w trakcie eliminacji. Wszystko składa się więc w logiczną całość.

Key West - super sprawa. Co do oszczędzania na wszystkim - Amerykanie znają takie zjawisko?

W Miami nie zwrócono nawet kibicom pieniędzy za dwa nierozegrane półfinały w 2014 roku, nie pokazuje się już stamtąd wszystkich meczów, jak leci, tylko wszystko kosztuje, i oszczędza się na piłkach - jak mówiła ostatnio Pennetta „In Miami you only have a tube of four balls”. W którychś finałach nie skompletowano jeszcze pełnej obsady sędziów liniowych. W porównaniu z IW Miami wygląda naprawdę blado.

Tak, do tej pory Amerykanie nie znali takiego zjawiska jak oszczędzanie (co odzwierciedlają oszczędności ich umierającej klasy średniej), bo prawda jest taka, że przez dziesiątki lat żyli ponad stan i finansowali wszystko z ogromnego deficytu. Oni nigdy w życiu nie spłacą swoich długów, a historia ekonomii nie zna takiego precedensu. Więc chyba za bardzo przyzwyczaiłeś się do tego, co było kiedyś. Ten świat się właśnie kończy.

Robredo faces #NextGen Russian in first round
Twelve-time ATP World Tour titlist Tommy Robredo makes his return to the BNP Paribas Open on Thursday in his first match at Indian Wells in two years. Having undergone right elbow surgery last season, the former World No. 5 in the Emirates ATP Rankings arrives in the desert on a protected ranking and will meet #NextGen ATP Russian Karen Khachanov first up on Day 1.
The pair has never met and will open play on Stadium 1, with Robredo looking to overturn an age gap of 14 years to deny the World No. 52. The Spaniard reached the quarter-finals at the BNP Paribas Open in 2010 and 2011.

#NextGen ATP Americans Frances Tiafoe and Bjorn Fratangelo also begin their 2017 BNP Paribas Open campaigns on Thursday. Tiafoe arrives off a first-round defeat at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco where he extended Juan Martin del Potro to a deciding-set tie-break. He opens against Serbian qualifier Dusan Lajovic. In the second round last year, Tiafoe held two match points before falling to eventual semi-finalist David Goffin.

• Novak Djokovic, Nadal and Roger Federer have won 12 of the last 13 BNP Paribas Open titles. In 2017, however, only one of the former champions could reach the semi-finals after being selected in the same quarter of an ATP draw for the first time ever. Also in the bottom quarter are Nick Kyrgios and del Potro, who both have wins over Djokovic, Nadal and Federer.
• Djokovic enters the first ATP Masters 1000 event of the season with five titles and a 17-match winning streak at Indian Wells. He could meet del Potro in the third round on Tuesday, only 13 days removed from their second-round match at Acapulco. Djokovic avenged losses to del Potro in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics by beating the Argentine in three sets at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel.
• Nadal is a three-time singles and two-time doubles champion at Indian Wells, and he’s playing both events again this year. The Spaniard will team up with Tomic for the first time. Nadal has already reached singles finals at the Australian Open and Acapulco in 2017. However, the lefty has played six finals and 30 events on hard courts since his last title on the surface at 2014 Doha.
• Federer, a four-time BNP Paribas Open champion, returns to Indian Wells after missing the 2016 event. The Swiss recovered from his knee injury and knocked off Nadal at the Australian Open to became the oldest Grand Slam champion (35) since Ken Rosewall at the 1972 Australian Open and the lowest-ranked major champion (No. 17) since Gaston Gaudio at 2004 Roland Garros.
• Nadal and Federer could meet again in the fourth round on Wednesday, which would be the earliest match in their rivalry since their first encounter in the 2004 Miami third round. The winner may meet Djokovic in the quarter-finals. Nadal’s last meeting with Djokovic was in the 2016 Rome quarter-finals, while Federer has not played the World No. 2 that early since the 2007 Dubai quarter-finals.
• World No. 1 Andy Murray is one of two former finalists in the top half of the draw along with No. 20 seed John Isner. Murray is missing only Indian Wells and Monte-Carlo from his collection of 14 ATP Masters 1000 titles. Now 2,215 points ahead of Djokovic in the Emirates ATP Rankings, Murray has captured 10 titles in 14 finals from the 16 tournaments that he has played since May.
• The 2017 BNP Paribas Open marks the one-year anniversary of #NextGenATP, launched at Indian Wells last year to spotlight the tour’s youngest Top 200 players. Born in 1996 or later, nine #NextGenATP players are in the draw this week, including American teenagers Tiafoe, Stefan Kozlov, Taylor Fritz and Reilly Opelka. Tiafoe is the highest-ranked of the four at No. 86.
• Seven of the Top 10, 15 of the Top 20 and 31 of the Top 40 singles players in the Emirates ATP Rankings are playing doubles at Indian Wells, including Murray, Djokovic and del Potro. Murray and Djokovic are teaming with countrymen Daniel Evans and Troicki respectively. Del Potro, on the other hand, is paired with 43-year-old Indian Leander Paes, who won the 2007 doubles title.
