Maria Sharapova: Grand Slam champion's drugs ban reduced on appeal
Spoiler:
Maria Sharapova's two-year doping ban has been reduced to 15 months following her appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The five-time Grand Slam winner, 29, was initially banned by the International Tennis Federation for two years after testing positive for meldonium at the 2016 Australian Open.
The Russian will be able to return to the tennis court on 26 April, 2017.
"I am counting the days until I can return," she said.
"In so many ways, I feel like something I love was taken away from me and it will feel really good to have it back. Tennis is my passion and I have missed it."
Meldonium, a heart disease drug also known as mildronate, became a banned substance on 1 January 2016.
Sharapova said she had been taking the drug since 2006 for health problems and had "not tried to use a performance-enhancing substance".
She said she was unaware the drug had been added to the World Anti-Doping Agency's (Wada) banned list.
The former world number one said she could not "accept" the "unfairly harsh" ban when it was announced in June.
The Cas panel said it found Sharapova's case "was not about an athlete who cheated", but added she "bore significant fault for her violation".
It added that Sharapova was at fault for not giving her agent "adequate instructions" in checking Wada's prohibited list and "failing to supervise and control" her agent.
The tribunal ruling said Sharapova tested positive for meldonium in an out-of-competition test on 2 February, as well as in the aftermath of her Australian Open quarter-final defeat by Serena Williams on 26 January.
It treated both results as a single anti-doping violation.
'One of my happiest days'
Sharapova won the Wimbledon singles title as a 17-year-old in 2004, going on to win the Australian, French and US Opens to complete a career Grand Slam.
However, she has not played professional tennis since losing to 22-time Grand Slam champion Williams.
Her suspension is backdated to 26 January 2016, meaning Sharapova can return to competitive action before next year's French Open in May.
"I've gone from one of the toughest days of my career last March when I learned about my suspension to now, one of my happiest days, as I found out I can return to tennis in April," she said.
"I have learned from this, and I hope the ITF has as well. Cas concluded that 'the panel has determined it does not agree with many of the conclusions of the ITF tribunal'.
"I have taken responsibility from the very beginning for not knowing that the over-the-counter supplement I had been taking for the last 10 years was no longer allowed.
"But I also learned how much better other federations were at notifying their athletes of the rule change, especially in Eastern Europe where mildronate is commonly taken by millions of people.
"Now that this process is over, I hope the ITF and other relevant tennis anti-doping authorities will study what these other federations did, so that no other tennis player will have to go through what I went through."
Sponsor 'proud to have stood by Sharapova'
Racquet manufacturer Head, which extended its contract with Sharapova despite her positive test, congratulated her ban was reduced.
Nike suspended its relationship with Sharapova in March, before saying it would stand by her following the tribunal's findings in June.
Car manufacturer Porsche said it would wait to see the outcome of her appeal, while Swiss watchmaker Tag Heuer cut ties with her in March.
Sharapova was Forbes' highest-paid female athlete for 11 consecutive years, until American tennis player Serena Williams moved above her this year.
The latest Forbes figures have Sharapova's winnings and endorsements at £17.1m, compared with £22.6m for Williams.

"There are other tournaments in which I would like to win. However, in the end, trophies are just pieces of metal. The main thing that I took from tennis is love. She will remain with me forever, and I am sincerely grateful for this “ - David Ferrer

Maria Sharapova to return from ban at Stuttgart event in April
Spoiler:
MOSCOW — Maria Sharapova will return from her 15-month doping ban at a tournament in Germany in April.
Car manufacturer Porsche, which sponsors both Sharapova and the event in Stuttgart, said Tuesday that Sharapova has been given a wild-card entry into the tournament. It will be her first official competition since she tested positive for meldonium at last year’s Australian Open.
”I could not be happier to have my first match back on tour at one of my favorite tournaments,” said the 29-year-old Sharapova, who won the Stuttgart tournament from 2012-14. ”I can’t wait to see all my great fans and to be back doing what I love.”
Sharapova will be eligible to return on April 26, the third day of main-draw play, which could leave her facing a busy schedule of matches in order to win a fourth Stuttgart title.
”I’m sure the fans will be excited to see her play,” WTA CEO Steve Simon said in a statement.
The Russian will have to rely on wild-card invites to tournaments, including Grand Slams, for a while because her ban means she has fallen out of the world rankings, which only count tournament performances over the preceding 12 months.
Sharapova was originally banned for two years but that was reduced on appeal in October. She said she had used meldonium for years for medical reasons and was not aware it had been banned for 2016.
During her ban, she has played in some exhibition events. Known for setting up her own confectionery brand and for an interest in the commercial side of tennis, Sharapova also enrolled in a two-week program at Harvard Business School last year.

Caroline Wozniacki: Maria Sharapova’s wildcards are disrespectful to other players
Spoiler:
Former world No.1 Caroline Wozniacki is completely against Maria Sharapova’s planned return from a 15-month drugs ban at Stuttgart next month and called it “disrespectful” to other WTA players. She said that when a player is banned for drugs, she should start from the bottom and fight her way back.
Following the 2016 Australian Open, Sharapova failed a drug test when banned substance Meldonium was detected in one of her samples. The ITF did not twiddle their thumbs and took the bold step of suspending one of their star players for a period of two years. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), however, later reduced the sentence by nine months making the Russian available for the upcoming 2017 French Open. However, the Russian will begin her comeback at the upcoming Stuttgart Grand Prix in July. But, Wozniacki is against giving wild cards when a player comes back from serving a ban.
“I think it’s very questionable, allowing — no matter who it is — a player that is still banned to play a tournament that week,” Wozniacki said to AFP. “I think it’s disrespectful to the other players and the WTA. But it is what it is. Obviously, rules are twisted and turned in favour of who wants to do what.”
She said that the Russian should start from the bottom and make her way back into the top.
She said, “I think everyone deserves a second chance and I think she's going to come back and fight her way back. I'm sure she's going to play well. But at the same time, I feel when a player is banned for drugs, I think someone should start from the bottom and fight their way back because it’s different from an injury where someone is out because they had hurt themselves.”
The Stuttgart Grand Prix begins on April 24 and the former World No.1 is set to play her first round match on April 26.

Popieram was i Karolinę, dzika karta do Stuttgartu to jest kpina.
