Men's semis top Day 12 slate

Two men’s semifinals headline Day 12 of the 2017 US Open, as the four men who’ve risen above the rest take to the big stage of Arthur Ashe Stadium in an effort to continue ascending. Two of Friday’s headliners figured to be factors on this day at the start of this event, both having been here before. The other two are more than a bit of a surprise, unexpected visitors who’ve elbowed their way into the penultimate round here for the first time in their respective careers.
First up on Friday, Pablo Carreno Busta takes on Kevin Anderson; after that, Rafael Nadal squares off with Juan Martin del Potro. Though it may not be the lineup of names we figured we’d get on this day, it is the lineup of names who’ve played the best tennis over the course of many days. Four men, two wins away from one very large title. With Sunday in sight, this is no time to lose focus.
Of the four men in action, Spain’s Carreno Busta is the only one who’s yet to drop a set in his advance to this point. This is the first-ever major semifinal for the Spaniard, but although the 26-year-old may be in unexplored territory, he’s looked pretty comfortable in blazing his trail, rolling over the opposition with a steady, aggressive ground game that has thus far proven impenetrable. The Spaniard’s run to his first Slam semi already has been a historic one – he’s the first player ever to play four qualifiers in a major. Of course, Carreno Busta can’t control who they put on the other side of the net; all he can do is make it uncomfortable for them to be there – and he’s done just that. When he did finally come up against a guy with a number next to his name, he fared just as well, easily dismissing No. 29 seed Diego Schwartzman in the quarters.
Having erased No. 29, next up for the Spaniard is No. 28, Anderson. The 31-year-old South African also is a first-time Slam semifinalist, his best-prior performance at a major coming here in 2015, when he upset Andy Murray in reaching the quarters. His appearance at this point of the tournament makes him the first South African man to reach the US Open semis since Johan Kriek in 1980. At 6-foot-8, Anderson is the very definition of a tall talent, owning an explosive serve and punishing ground game. His 92 aces to this stage of the tournament are tops among men – by far – and he’s won 83 percent of his first-serve points, also best among remaining men.
This summer, Anderson dropped a few hints that he might be a force in Flushing, reaching the final of the Washington, D.C., hard-court event and the quarters in Montreal. But for a guy with such a loud game, Anderson has made something of a quiet advance to this point, not facing a seed until he planted No. 17 Sam Querrey in the quarters. In that match, Anderson stood tall against the American on virtually all the big points, winning a tight 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 decision.
Anderson has taken both meetings between these remarkable men, including a win a few weeks back in the second round of Montreal. And while Carreno Busta has looked extremely sharp in reaching this point, it doesn’t seem likely he’ll be able to blunt the big serve of the South African. When you’re up against that big a serve, the point of no return can come quickly. In a tight three, Anderson is on to the final.

No less a tennis authority than Mick Jagger said it best: You can’t always get what you want. But for all those tennis fans who were clamoring for a first-ever US Open encounter between Nadal and Roger Federer, you’ll still get what you need, as the No. 1 seed takes on del Potro instead.
Nadal, playing this event as its No. 1 seed for the first time since 2010, earned that top line with a bottom line that this year includes his record 10th French Open crown and a runner-up finish at the Australian Open. The two-time US Open champ, winner here in 2010 and 2013, has now captured 15 Slam crowns in 22 finals, second-best in each category, trailing only Federer. Here, he’s continued his major momentum, playing his way into his 26th Grand Slam semifinal with the loss of just two sets. His quarterfinal win over Russia’s Andrey Rublev was his most impressive. In the 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 win, Nadal was untouchable, winning 84 percent of his first-serve points, getting in 83 percent of his returns and converting seven of 18 break opportunities.
Breaks – of any kind – figure to be much harder to come by against del Potro, who, despite being the 24th seed is also easily the No. 1 feel-good story of the Flushing fortnight. The 28-year-old Argentine, who had one foot out the door early in his fourth-round match against Dominic Thiem, has turned his second wind into a gale, following up his thrilling comeback win against Thiem with a resounding rout of Federer in the quarters—his first win over a Top 5 player this year.
In that match, del Potro flat-out outplayed the greatest ever to play, winning 81 percent of his first-serve points, serving up 12 aces and nailing 48 winners. He faced just three break points in the four-set match and saved one of those. In the final set, del Potro lost one point on his serve. In short, the 2009 US Open champ has become a large-serving Lazarus, working his way back from the brink to the brink of another championship.
Obviously, this match shapes up as the best test so far for both men, but that’s pretty much how it ought to be in the semis of a Slam. The Spaniard owns an 8-5 edge in their career meetings and has won 14 consecutive Grand Slam semifinal appearances since losing to del Potro here at this stage in 2009. That said, the Argentine took their last meeting, taking out Nadal in the semis of the Rio Olympics last year on his way to the silver medal. Del Potro managed to beat both Federer and Nadal on his way to a title in 2009; Novak Djokovic took out the big two on his way to the 2011 crown. It can be done—it’s just really hard to do it.
This has all the makings of a classic, the explosive del Potro against the indefatigable Nadal. Pity the poor tennis balls; envy the lucky tennis fans. In a furious four, del Potro pulls off another upset, blasting his way into the final.

The semi-finals on Friday feature two former US Open champions and two Grand Slam semi-final debutants. The 2017 US Open is the first Grand Slam event to feature three double-digit seeds or unseeded players in the semi-finals since 2002 Roland Garros: [11] Juan Carlos Ferrero, [18] Alex Corretja and [20] Albert Costa.
All three were Spaniards, and the 2017 US Open has been another breakout tournament for Spain. Two Spaniards are in the semi-finals for the first time in US Open history: Rafael Nadal and Pablo Carreno Busta.
No. 1 Nadal and No. 24 seed Juan Martin del Potro resume their rivalry with the Spaniard holding an 8-5 FedEx ATP Head2Head lead. However, the Argentine leads 5-4 on hard courts, winning the past two meetings (2013 Shanghai, 2016 Rio Olympics). Nadal is 3-2 in US Open semi-finals and 22-3 in Grand Slam semi-finals overall, winning the past 14 since falling to del Potro at the 2009 US Open.

The Spaniard is looking to reach his 23rd career Grand Slam final (15-7) and third of the season (1-1). This is del Potro’s second US Open SF and fourth Grand Slam SF overall (1-2). The 2009 US Open champion last reached a Grand Slam SF at 2013 Wimbledon (l. to Djokovic).
Nadal won 10th titles at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell and Roland Garros. It was in Paris he passed Pete Sampras for second all-time with 15 Grand Slam titles. He also won a fifth Mutua Madrid Open on clay.
Del Potro, who saved match points to beat Dominic Thiem in five sets in the fourth round, is appearing in just his second ATP World Tour semi-final of the season, having reached the last four at Delray Beach. He is one of only five players to have beaten both Roger Federer and Nadal at the same tournament.
In the first semi-final on Arthur Ashe Stadium, No. 28 seed Kevin Anderson brings a 2-0 FedEx ATP Head2Head record against No. 12 seed Carreno Busta, who has not dropped a set in five matches (15-0). The last time two first-time Grand Slam semi-finalists met in a SF was 2005 Roland Garros (Puerta d. Davydenko).
Carreno Busta is attempting to become the first US Open champion since Neale Fraser in 1960 to win the title without dropping a set. The 31-year-old Anderson has only been broken three times in 87 service games (97 per cent), saving 15 of 18 break points.
Anderson is the first South African to reach the US Open semi-finals since Johan Kriek in 1980 (l. to Borg). He bids to become the first South African in a US Open final since Cliff Drysdale in 1965 and a Grand Slam final since Kriek won the 1981 Australian Open (d. Denton). Kriek represented the USA when he won the 1982 Australian Open.
Anderson, Carreno Busta and del Potro are all capable of milestones based on their ranking. As the World No. 32, Anderson is the lowest-ranked player in a Grand Slam semi-final since No. 34 Tommy Haas at 2009 Wimbledon and in a US Open semi-final since No. 54 Mikhail Youzhny in 2006.
Anderson or the 28th-ranked del Potro could become the lowest-ranked US Open finalist and/or champion since the inception of the Emirates ATP Rankings in 1973.

The South African or Argentine could also become the lowest-ranked Grand Slam finalist since No. 38 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the 2008 Australian Open. Anderson, del Potro or the 19th-ranked Carreno Busta could become the lowest-ranked Grand Slam champion since No. 44 Gaston Gaudio at 2004 Roland Garros.
If Carreno Busta defeats Anderson and Nadal defeats del Potro, Carreno Busta would be the lowest-ranked US Open finalist since No. 22 Mark Philippoussis in 1998 and Grand Slam finalist since No. 25 Robin Soderling at 2009 Roland Garros. Carreno Busta would be the lowest-ranked US Open champion since the 20th-ranked Agassi in 1994.
In a stop-start season due to injury, Anderson has found form on the North American hard courts, reaching the Citi Open final in Washington, D.C. and the Coupe Rogers quarter-finals, losing both times to Alexander Zverev. Earlier in the season he reached the semi-finals on clay at the Millenium Estoril Open.
Carreno Busta won that tournament, without dropping a set, for his third ATP World Tour title. The Spaniard was a runner-up in Rio de Janeiro and a semi-finalist in Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo and at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
