Stars to come out for Arthur Ashe Kids' Day

On Saturday, Aug. 25, the grounds of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center will be transformed into a one-day family festival for the 23rd annual Arthur Ashe Kids' Day.

Come see tennis superstars Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Angelique Kerber and Madison Keys take to the courts at the ticketed stadium show for fun exhibition matches and a skills competition.

From 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., kids can try out Net Generation tennis during the free grounds festival, plus enjoy live music and other family-friendly activities.

From 1-3 p.m., the ticketed stadium show will feature live music from pop headliners, including CNCO, Echosmith and In Real Life. The show will be co-hosted by television and film star Skai Jackson and Interscope recording artist Alex Aiono, along with Radio Disney’s Morgan.

Wawrinka-Dimitrov Leads Five Must-See First-Rounders At The US Open

Yes, again. Just two months after Dimitrov and Wawrinka clashed in the opening round at The Championships, the stars will meet again in the match to watch in the first round of the US Open. And this time, somehow, there might be even more anticipation.

Wawrinka, on the comeback from two left knee surgeries last year, beat Dimitrov at Wimbledon on his least favourite surface. And while the Swiss is No. 101 in the ATP Rankings, the 2016 US Open champion is playing at a much higher level than that. Wawrinka won a combined five matches at the Rogers Cup and the Western & Southern Open, all against opponents currently inside the Top 40, with his two losses coming in tight defeats against Rafael Nadal in Toronto and Roger Federer in Cincinnati.


Dimitrov, the reigning Nitto ATP Finals champion, has himself shown progress during this hard-court swing, reaching his first quarter-final since April in Canada and pushing eventual winner Djokovic in a three-set Cincinnati loss. The Bulgarian will be eager to avenge his loss from SW19 in New York, which would extend his FedEx ATP Head2Head series lead against Wawrinka to 5-3.

It will be interesting to see who will be able to control points in Flushing Meadows. Dimitrov is at his best when he is serving well and using his athleticism to take the ball early and move into net. But Wawrinka, who is moving closer to his best tennis, can hit groundstrokes with anyone in the world, especially with his impressive one-handed backhand. The winner will face a qualifier in the second round.

[1] Rafael Nadal (ESP) vs. David Ferrer (ESP)
Could this be good-bye for Ferrer, who is playing his 16th (consecutive) and final US Open? The Spaniard will look to pull off a stunning upset against World No. 1 Nadal, who leads their rivalry 24-6.

While Nadal has dominated the former World No. 3 over the years, the compatriots are even on hard courts, each winning four of their meetings. And interestingly enough, Ferrer has won both of their Grand Slam matches on the surface, including a clash at the 2007 US Open.


Nadal is in far better form, though, fresh off his victory at the Rogers Cup. Ferrer, who spent 13 consecutive years in the Top 50 of the ATP Rankings until he fell out of the group in July, is now down to No. 148. The 36-year-old is 9-17 at tour-level this campaign.

But against Nadal, expect Ferrer to summon everything he has at a tournament where he has enjoyed plenty of success, including trips to the semi-finals in 2007 and 2012. Ferrer will need to not only chase down all of Nadal’s aggressive shots, as has become the Valencia-resident’s trademark over the years, but he will also need to take it to the top seed if he hopes to keep Nadal from gaining a rhythm.

Do you know where these two left-handed Spaniards last met? If you guessed the 2017 US Open, you’re right. Lopez, who was ironically the No. 31 seed at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center a year ago, swept by Verdasco in four sets before falling to Federer in the third round.

Both players will be especially hungry at the year’s final Grand Slam, as they earned a total of one match win at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events in Toronto and Cincinnati. It is Verdasco’s 16th consecutive US Open and Lopez’s record 67th straight major main draw appearance.

But this matchup is not only interesting based on their history, but their styles. Verdasco has long been one of the most dangerous baseliners in the world, and he is facing an opponent who comes to net as much as possible. Verdasco is likely to try to control his service games with his serve and a big forehand, while Lopez will serve and volley to pressure the 34-year-old.

Neither guy shies away from the doubles court, either, meaning that fans are almost guaranteed to see some sensational play at the net. Whoever prevails will face former World No. 1 Andy Murray or Aussie James Duckworth.

Who could forget #NextGenATP American Tiafoe’s effort in the first round of the 2017 US Open, pushing Federer to five sets as he tried to send the Swiss out in the opening round of a Grand Slam for the first time since Roland Garros in 2003? Tiafoe showed his propensity for the big moment, and he’ll have another shot against No. 29 seed Mannarino.


The Frenchman beat his 20-year-old opponent the last time they met, which was at the 2016 Citi Open in Washington, D.C. But Tiafoe is a different player now than he was two years ago, playing the best tennis of his life. The American claimed his first ATP World Tour title earlier this year at the Delray Beach Open, and at World No. 42 he is within four spots of his career-best ATP Ranking.

But Mannarino has proven a difficult matchup for many players with his flat groundstrokes off both wings. The 30-year-old will try to keep Tiafoe from gaining any rhythm, while the American will use his athleticism and explosiveness to dictate play in front of his home crowd. The victor will face #NextGenATP Alex de Minaur or Japanese Taro Daniel.

[27] Karen Khachanov (RUS) vs. Albert Ramos-Vinolas (ESP)
Few players are in as good of form as Khachanov, who used his massive hitting from the baseline to reach the semi-finals of a Masters 1000 event for the first time in Toronto. The Russian, who qualified for the Next Gen ATP Finals last year, has captured two ATP World Tour titles, including one earlier this season in Marseille. But his opponent, Ramos-Vinolas, has reached a final at the elite level, doing so last year on clay in Monte-Carlo.

This is a rematch of a first-round clash from Cincinnati, which Khachanov won in three sets. The 22-year-old leads the Spaniard 3-1 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, and all four of their meetings have come in three sets. Khachanov beat Ramos-Vinolas to claim his first tour-level trophy two years ago in Chengdu.

The 6’6” right-hander will try to dominate with his power from the baseline, while the left-handed Ramos-Vinolas will attempt to set himself up in points with his slice serve, and use angles with his forehand to open up the court. Whoever gets through this match could be on a collision course with top-seeded Nadal in the third round. They’ll face Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller or a qualifier in the second round.

Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams headline Opening Night

Defending US Open men's champion Rafael Nadal and six-time US Open women's champion Serena Williams will headline the 2018 US Open's Opening Night marquee under the bright lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday.

The two all-time greats, who own 40 Grand Slam singles titles between them, will begin their respective pursuits of this year's men's and women's titles as the closing acts for an Opening Day that will feature eight former US Open champions in action.

For the first time this year, both Arthur Ashe Stadium and the new Louis Armstrong Stadium will each host a schedule of night matches, and the evening slate in Armstrong on Opening Night is a blockbuster bill in its own right, with Victoria Azarenka and Juan Martin del Potro leading Armstrong's first-ever scheduled nighttime action.

Others in action during Monday's Day Session include former US Open champs Sloane Stephens, Venus Williams, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka and Svetlana Kuznetsova, as well as women's top seed Simona Halep, 2017 men's finalist Kevin Anderson, two-time Grand Slam champion Garbiñe Muguruza and big-hitting Americans John Isner, Sam Querrey and Jack Sock.

Canada's #NextGenATP stars will face off in round one

The future of Canadian tennis will be on showcase from the start of the US Open, which begins Monday. The bad news for Canadian tennis fans: One of their brightest #NextGenATP stars won't survive the first round.

Felix Auger-Aliassime, 18, and Denis Shapovalov, 19, will meet for the first time at tour-level in New York. The two played last year at the ATP Challenger Tour event in Drummondville (indoor hard), with Shapovalov winning 7-5, 6-3.

The left-hander is the 28th seed and will try to back up his fourth-round run of a year ago (l. to Carreno Busta). Auger-Aliassime qualified to make his Grand Slam main-draw debut.

Both players are in strong contention to qualify for the Next Gen ATP Finals, to be held 6-10 November in Milan. Shapovalov is currently third in the ATP Race To Milan; Auger-Aliassime is in 12th place. The top seven players in the Race will qualify automatically, while the eighth spot will be reserved for the winner of an all-Italian qualifier tournament to be held just prior to the prestigious 21-and-under event in Milan.

It will be the second meeting between the teens, having previously clashed at the ATP Challenger Tour event in Drummondville, Canada, last year. Shapovalov prevailed 7-5, 6-3, en route to his first Challenger title.

ATP Race To Milan

Shapovalov and Auger-Aliassime's countryman Peter Polansky snuck into the US Open main draw as a lucky loser. But the 30-year-old is starting to make that act look like skill. He became the first player to earn a lucky loser spot in all four Grand Slam tournaments in the same year.

He might need a bit of luck during his opener: Polansky faces fourth seed Alexander Zverev. Other notable first-rounders featuring qualifiers include Spanish veteran vs. 15th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece; home favourite Donald Young vs. third seed and 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro; and Argentine Facundo Bagnis against 2016 semi-finalist Gael Monfils.

The time has come for the final Grand Slam championship of the year, as the ATP World Tour's best descend on Flushing Meadows for the US Open. All seven players who have lifted the trophy since 2004 are in the field. World No. 1 Rafael Nadal is the defending champion, while five-time winner Roger Federer and red-hot Western & Southern Open titlist Novak Djokovic lead the field of challengers trying to keep the Spaniard from becoming the first repeat champion in New York in a decade.

1) Big Four Vs. The World: Past US Open champions Nadal, Federer, Djokovic and Andy Murray will compete at the same tournament for the first time since 2017 Wimbledon. Nadal, Federer, Djokovic or Murray has been No. 1 in the ATP Rankings for 762 consecutive weeks (2 February 2004 through 9 September 2018). Though the Big Four own 49 of the past 54 Grand Slam titles, Juan Martin del Potro, Marin Cilic and Stan Wawrinka have also won the US Open. Djokovic, Murray and Wawrinka return to New York after missing the 2017 US Open due to injuries.

2) All He Does Is Win: No. 1 seed Rafael Nadal has lost three matches in 2018 -- the same number he lost in 2013 entering the US Open. Nadal is 40-3 this season and was 53-3 at the start of the 2013 US Open, where he won his 13th Grand Slam title. The Spaniard has won six Grand Slam titles as the top seed, including the US Open in 2010 and 2017.

3) Grapple In The Apple: Legendary boxing promoter Don King billed it the ‘Grapple in the Apple’ in 2008, but Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have still never played at the US Open. On six occasions, they were only one match away. If they hope to meet in Flushing Meadows for the first time this year, it would be for the championship.

4) Sixth Sense: No. 6 seed Novak Djokovic went 6-6 in his first six tournaments of 2018. He is 27-4 in six events since, gaining plenty of momentum heading into the US Open with his triumphs at Wimbledon and the Western & Southern Open, where he completed his Career Golden Masters. The last time the two-time champion failed to reach at least the semi-finals in New York was 2006.

5) Roger’s Records: Roger Federer is the all-time leader with 20 Grand Slam men’s singles titles and 310 weeks at No. 1 in the ATP Rankings. The Swiss could extend those records and set several new ones during the 2018 US Open. Federer seeks his sixth US Open title, which would break a three-way tie for most in the Open Era. If he wins the title and Nadal does not advance to the semi-finals, Federer will also return to the top of the rankings.

6) Former Champions: Juan Martin del Potro, who won the US Open in 2009, is playing his 22nd Grand Slam since that victory, and Marin Cilic, who triumphed here four years ago, is playing his 15th Slam since winning the title.. Either could set an Open Era record for most attempts before winning a second major crown. Stan Wawrinka, who is continuing his comeback from two left knee surgeries last year, clinched the title here two years ago. Murray won his first major six years ago at the US Open.

7) Sascha Seeks Semi: Alexander Zverev has won three ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles and nine tour-level trophies overall, but he is pursuing his first Grand Slam semi-final. Zverev earned three wins from two-sets-to-one down to reach his maiden Grand Slam quarter-final at 2018 Roland Garros. The German leads the ATP World Tour with 43 match wins so far this year.

Stefanos Shining: It took Stefanos Tsitsipas nine tries to earn his first ATP World Tour win last October. Less than a year later, the #NextGenATP Greek became the youngest player to defeat four Top 10 opponents at a single event since the ATP World Tour was established in 1990. Tsitsipas beat Dominic Thiem, Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev and Kevin Anderson to reach his maiden Masters 1000 final, where he fell just short against Nadal.

9) Mastering The Open: Nadal and Djokovic won Masters 1000 titles in Toronto and Cincinnati, respectively. The Canada champion has won the US Open title twice in the past 10 years (Nadal in 2013, Djokovic in 2011). The Cincinnati champion has been victorious at the US Open once in the past 10 years (Nadal in 2013). Nadal also attempts to become the first player to repeat as US Open champion since Federer won five straight titles from 2004-08.

10) Mike’s Pursuit: Mike Bryan, the No. 1 player in the ATP Doubles Rankings, is once again competing with Jack Sock as his brother, Bob Bryan, recovers from hip surgery. Bryan/Sock triumphed at Wimbledon to give Bryan his 17th Grand Slam men’s doubles title. If the pair lifts the trophy in Flushing Meadows, Bryan will break a tie with John Newcombe (17) to become the all-time leader in men’s doubles Grand Slam titles. Bryan/Bryan hold the record for most US Open victories with five.

However, Nadal leads their FedEx ATP Head2Head rivalry 24-6, and will look to add to that lead in their rivalry when the pair meets for the first time since the 2015 Nitto ATP Finals. The top seed, who has won five tour-level titles this campaign, will look to improve his 40-3 record, which leads the ATP World Tour in winning percentage in 2018.

There are two more former champions in action on day one, as former World No. 1 Andy Murray competes at his first major since 2017 Wimbledon due to the hip surgery he underwent this January. The Scot faces Aussie James Duckworth in the opening round of his fifth tournament back.

And Juan Martin del Potro, who is at a career-high World No. 3, will look to revive the magic of his 2009 title run when he starts his tournament against home favourite Donald Young in the first night session in the new Louis Armstrong Stadium. It’s the first time the ‘Tower of Tandil’ is facing the qualifier, who has made the fourth round at the event twice (2011, 2015).
