Zverev, Anderson, Tsitsipas also in action on Saturday
It’s hard to believe that Roger Federer made his ATP Masters 1000 debut 20 years ago at the Miami Open presented by Itau, but the then-babyfaced 18-year-old has become a Stadium Court staple at this event.
Federer lost his maiden Masters 1000 match to Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark, who reached a career-high of No. 41 in the ATP Rankings, 7-5, 7-6(4). He’s become much more accustomed to winning since then. After starting out 0-1, Federer has since compiled a 368-104 record in Masters 1000 matches (368-105, 78%) and 27 titles, including three in the Sunshine State (2005-2006; 2017). He only trails Novak Djokovic (32) and Rafael Nadal (33) in Masters 1000 titles. The Swiss has also earned $28.8 million in prize money from Masters 1000 events alone.

Seeded fourth this year, Federer will look to avoid a repeat of his stunning opening-round loss last year to Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis when he opens against Radu Albot of Moldova. This will be their first FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting. Albot is no stranger to success in Florida after lifting his maiden ATP Tour title last month at the Delray Beach Open (d. Evans).

Second seed Alexander Zverev is also in action against David Ferrer, who is competing in Miami for the 17th and final time. They played at this very juncture last year in Miami, with Zverev outlasting the tenacious Spaniard in a grueling three-set battle. Zverev has won their past four FedEx ATP Head2Head clashes, including a second-round win last month in Acapulco, but Ferrer is sure to make the German work for every point.
Other notable matches headlining Saturday action include sixth seed Kevin Anderson taking on Jaume Munar, eighth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece battling Mackenzie McDonald, ninth seed Marin Cilic facing off against qualifier Andrey Rublev, and No. 30 seed Stan Wawrinka opening Stadium Court play against Filip Krajinovic.
