Djokovic Lighting Up Melbourne Ahead Of ATP Cup Defence
Spoiler:
Team Serbia won the inaugural ATP Cup trophy in 2020
Will Novak Djokovic and Team Serbia retain its ATP Cup trophy next week? The defending champions are certainly putting the hard yards in with just two days to go before the start of the 12-country event.
World No. 1 Djokovic and teammate Filip Krajinovic practised Saturday at Melbourne Park in preparation for their title defence. They will be joined by Serbia’s No. 2 singles player Dusan Lajovic and doubles standout Nikola Cacic.
Team Serbia, led by captain Viktor Troicki, will have to battle through Group A, which also includes Germany and Canada, to reach the knockout semi-finals. Serbia defeated Canada 3-0 in last year’s quarter-finals.
Listen To Troicki's ATP Tennis Radio Interview:
“It’s a really tough group, maybe the toughest group out there. [There are] really tough players on both Germany and Canada,” Troicki told ATP Tennis Radio. “It’s going to be tough for us, but we have Novak and hopefully Dutzee [Dusan Lajovic] also performs as well as he did last year. I’m really hoping and believing in my team. It’s going to be some great matches.
“There are some great teams. It’s a really tough competition this year as it was last year, but there will be some really fun matches to watch and I’m looking forward to it.”

Djokovic Aims To 'Feed Off Crowd's Energy' At ATP Cup
Spoiler:
Serbia faces Germany and Canada in Group A at ATP Cup
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic is looking forward to feeding off the support of the crowd when defending champion Serbia starts its bid to retain the ATP Cup title on Tuesday.
“I’ve missed seeing crowds in the stands the most,” said Djokovic during Team Serbia's media conference on Sunday. “At this stage of my career, after playing professional tennis for more than 15 years, that is one of the biggest driving forces or motivations, inspirations. Playing in front of a crowd, feeding off that energy and exchanging great passion and joy that I, and the fans, have for the sport.
“This country has done a great job dealing with this virus. I'm grateful that we have an opportunity to practise, to play and to compete in the sport that we love. We are all excited to be here.”
Serbia’s two Group A ties will be contested on Rod Laver Arena, played host to Djokovic's eight Australian Open title runs since 2008.
“It does feel like a home for me in Australia, in Melbourne, particularly on Rod Laver [Arena]. That is, by far, [the] most successful tennis court in my career… [There are] too many memories, beautiful memories, to pick one that would stand out. Each year that I come back to the court, it feels even better. The more you win obviously on the court, the more confident you feel coming back to it.”
Viktor Troicki has the captain’s hat on this week, helping to steer Serbia’s bid to retain the ATP Cup trophy. It’s a big honour for the 34-year-old.
"I'm really looking forward to this,” said the former World No. 12. “I hope with my experience, and with my help, we can achieve again the same result this year. I know there's a lot of tough teams. We have a tough group, but I have a huge trust in my boys, this team. I hope we go all the way also this year.”
Djokovic will be supported on court by Dusan Lajovic and Filip Krajinovic, who are both placed inside the Top 35 of the FedEx ATP Rankings, and Nikola Cacic, who has won two ATP Tour doubles titles.
“It's going to be great event,” said Lajovic. “We have a tough group [and] tough matches right from the start. There is no room for any kind of mistakes. We’ve got to start strong. Hopefully, we can have a good tournament like last year. I believe that a lot of Serbian fans will come to support us, like last year. It's going to be I think a great experience to feel that energy again.”
Defending champion Serbia opens its Group A campaign at the 12-team ATP Cup on Tuesday against Canada, followed by its second tie on Thursday against Germany. The top team from each of the four groups will advance to the knock-out semi-finals.

Novak Djokovic will commence another Australian Open campaign with a point to prove – but a very different one to that of a year ago.
The favourite to win a 17th Grand Slam title at AO 2020, he did just that, departing Melbourne Park with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in his sights ahead of him in the Grand Slam titles race – and rapidly closing that gap.
But 12 months on, his progress has stalled. That narrowing gap has widened. Instead of what appeared an inevitable march to history, some doubts now exist as to whether the driven Serb will end his career with the biggest major title haul of all – one of his career goals.
When Djokovic returns to Melbourne Park in February, his happiest hunting ground on Earth, it presents the perfect opportunity to rebound, and banish those doubts.
Unstoppable force
Djokovic’s five-set triumph over Dominic Thiem in the AO 2020 final was telling.
Facing an inspired underdog who had the crowd’s support, Djokovic was struggling to hit top gear, and fell behind two-sets-to-one in an AO final for the first time – yet still won.
Many pundits declared him head-and-shoulders above the rest of the field; Steve Flink wrote for tennis.com that Djokovic was "primed to make this year one of the best in his illustrious career."
As predicted, Djokovic continued winning, scooping the ATP Dubai title and revealing – perhaps tongue-in-cheek, but with some seriousness – his aim to go undefeated in 2020.
Coronavirus then intervened. But when the ATP season resumed five months later at the Western & Southern Open, Djokovic kept rolling, winning that title to improve his 2020 win-loss record to 23-0.
“Can anyone or anything stop Novak Djokovic from winning his 18th Grand Slam title two weeks from Sunday at the US Open?” asked Adam Zagoria in Forbes.
Grand Slam setbacks
It turned out something could. Djokovic was defaulted in the fourth round after accidentally striking a line-judge with a ball.
Admirably, he appeared to have re-focused when he returned to Europe and won the Rome Masters titles before reaching the Roland Garros final.
The feeling was Djokovic was primed to beat Nadal in that final given the tournament’s rescheduling came with a drastic change in conditions; they were now cold, damp and heavy, and indoors.
Djokovic’s coach Goran Ivanisevic even declared: “Nadal has no chance … on this clay and with Novak, who has got into his head.”
Nadal won 6-0 6-2 7-5.
"He's now back in a position where he's got something to prove. He's dangerous when it's like that.”
Todd Woodbridge on Novak Djokovic
Djokovic, still with 17 major titles, is now three behind Nadal and Federer, who own 20 each.
"I think Djokovic can look back at 2020 and feel hardly done by, more so than any other athlete in tennis,” said Todd Woodbridge. “Because he was, in my opinion, in his absolute prime and ready to dominate in that season.”
After exiting the season-ending ATP Finals, Djokovic described his season as “OK”.
“I have had better and I have had worse. I have won one Grand slam title, played the final in another one and I am year-ending world No.1. When I think about it, it is not just ‘OK’, it was a great season, but I strive to be better and I think that I can do better,” he said.
“Right now, after this kind of ending, it feels bitter.”
Looking to rebound
“Bitter” feelings can serve as redemptive fuel, especially when coupled with the confidence boost that comes with returning to Melbourne Park, where he has won more than 90 per cent of his matches.
Djokovic has openly discussed his desire to achieve tennis history; most recently he admitted “I will do all I can to make it happen” with regard to accumulating the most weeks ever at world No.1.
Motivation, therefore, will not be lacking. And what better way to take another step toward his goals than with a ninth AO title?
Novak Djokovic (L) beat Dominic Thiem to win the Australian Open 2020 trophy. It was his eighth title from eight finals at Melbourne Park.
Wally Masur believes Djokovic, like other great champions, has an uncanny ability to rebound quickly from setbacks.
"You would think that Novak had the opportunity to go home (after 2020), to sort of refresh and train hard,” said the former world No.15.
“I just back him in at the Australian Open. Geez he plays well in Australia. He likes the surface, he likes the conditions, and I think he's probably had a bit of time to reset.”
Woodbridge agreed the Serb will be incredibly difficult to beat at AO 2021.
“Physically he's good, and he's incredibly driven to become the greatest of all time,” he said.
“He's obviously the most dominant player to ever play here. And he's now back in a position where he's got something to prove.

Tenis. Ranking ATP: Kacper Żuk złamał kolejną barierę. Hubert Hurkacz w Top 30, spadek Kamila Majchrzaka
- Gdybym miał wybrać jakiś wyjątkowy moment, byłby to finał Australian Open z 2012 roku z Rafaelem Nadalem. To jeden z najlepszych meczów, jakie rozegrałem.
To daje poczucie energii i pasję.
To najstarsza i najbardziej tradycyjna impreza sportowa.
Najbliższa to udział w ATP Cup (2-6 lutego).
W pierwszej kolejce, we wtorek, Serbowie zagrają z Kanadyjczykami. Początek meczu o północy czasu polskiego.

Defending champion Serbia makes winning start to ATP Cup
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic won two rubbers on Tuesday as the defending champion Serbia edged past Canada to make a winning start in Group A at the ATP Cup.
Djokovic won all eight matches he contested across singles and doubles in last year’s run to the title, and extended his streak to a ‘perfect 10’ as he paired up with Filip Krajinovic for his second match of the day. Both of Team Canada’s top singles players, Denis Shapovalov and Milos Raonic, were also back in action in the deciding rubber.
The Serbians found their rhythm after a sluggish start against Raonic and Shapovalov, who powered an early break opportunity in the first set. But Djokovic and Krajinovic stayed solid to save the only deciding point they faced in the match, keeping the pressure on the Canadians. They were rewarded with the first break of the match at 6-5 after a Shapovalov double fault to take the opening set, and edged through a second-set tie-break to claim the victory, 7-5, 7-6(4).
"Filip Krajinovic was the key," said Djokovic. "The way he played today is phenomenal. He came out [with] very solid returning. He found his serve, great rhythm. [He] just played some really key shots in the second set when we needed it the most."
The victory sends Serbia to the top of Group A, which includes Germany. Canada will be back in action on Wednesday against Germany, with Serbia hitting the court against the Alexander Zverev-led Germans on Thursday.
Djokovic’s undefeated streak continued at the ATP Cup as he started his campaign with a 7-5, 7-5 victory against Shapovalov earlier in the day to keep Serbia alive against Canada.
Serbia’s top player won eight matches en route to the trophy last year, including six singles matches. One of those was a highly-entertaining battle against 21-year-old Shapovalov, who pushed Djokovic to the limit in the quarter-finals before falling in a third set tie-break.
Djokovic was in for another stern test against Shapovalov inside Rod Laver Arena, taking the court after Milos Raonic put Canada ahead with a victory over Dusan Lajovic in the No. 2 singles players’ match.
He narrowly kept Shapovalov at bay in a blistering all-court battle, targeting the lines to force his opponent to go for bigger shots. The tactic paid off as Shapovalov’s unforced error count grew, racking up 21 in the first set alone. Djokovic’s serve was firing on all cylinders as he won 80% of points behind his first serve and didn’t face a break point against Shapovalov.
The Serbian needed one break of serve in each set to keep Shapovalov contained and seal his first match win of 2020 after an hour and 53 minutes. With his victory, Djokovic ensures that the tie will come down to a deciding doubles match as Canada and Serbia sit at one win apiece.
After the match, Djokovic thanked fans for the atmosphere they helped to create. "We don't get to see crowds in the tennis stadiums these days so much, so it's definitely a blessing. I'm really grateful to see you guys here in the stands," Djokovic said.
"It was a very close match. Playing Shapo is always a great challenge on hard courts. He's such a dynamic, explosive player; very talented. I thought we played on a very high level, so I'm really pleased with how I've started the season. This is the best way to kickstart the season, playing for your country.”
Earlier in the day, former World No. 3 Raonic served up a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Lajovic to earn Canada a crucial first point over defending champion Serbia at the ATP Cup.
Raonic, Canada’s No. 2 singles player, had to hit the ground running in his tournament debut as Canada was dealt a tough draw, landing in Group A with Serbia and Germany.
The 29-year-old was in command against Serbian No. 2 Lajovic, who won four of his six singles matches en route to the trophy last year. Raonic dropped only three points on serve in the first set and five in the second, keeping Lajovic in check as the Serbian tried to jam him with body serves of his own.
How To Watch
Raonic grew in confidence as the match unfolded, converting the lone break opportunity to finally pull away at 5-3 before sealing the set with an ace. He continued to apply the pressure against Lajovic in the second set, and claimed the victory after an hour and 20 minutes.
“I think I was sharp. I was there in a lot of return games. I kept putting pressure,” Raonic said. “I missed a few break point opportunities, but I kept sticking around and took care of my serve, which is always important.
“This is the first time playing in this event for Canada... It's a lot of fun to be here. It's a great honor as well to represent Canada.”

Wówczas do akcji wszedł Novak Djoković. Lider reprezentacji Serbii najpierw doprowadził do remisu, ogrywając 7:5, 7:5 Denisa Shapovalova, a następnie przyczynił się do zwycięstwo swojej drużyny w całej konfrontacji. Belgradczyk stanął bowiem do gry deblowej w miejsce pierwotnie awizowanego Nikoli Cacicia i wspólnie z Filipem Krajinoviciem wygrali z Raoniciem i Shapovalovem 7:5, 7:6(4).

Serbia i Kanada kolejne mecze rozegrają z reprezentacją Niemiec.
Thiem nie sprostał roli lidera
Do niespodzianki doszło natomiast w meczu otwarcia Grupy C. Austria przegrała 1:2 z Włochami, choć w pierwszej grze Dennis Novak niespodziewanie pokonał 6:3, 6:2 Fabio Fogniniego.

Chasing history: Novak's embrace of the Grand Slam race
Spoiler:
Novak Djokovic has become increasingly candid and clear in discussing what motivates him.
In a pro career spanning more than 15 years, he has amassed 17 Grand Slam singles titles. Just two players – Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal – own more.
They are the Serb’s primary rivals, and also still active on tour. Their identical tally of 20 major trophies is a benchmark Djokovic has set his sights on, and beyond.
“It always has been the case but, especially now, more or less everything is about Grand Slams in terms of how I see tennis and how I approach them because they matter the most,” he said at the 2019 US Open.
“I'm aware of (the Grand Slam titles race), of course. And it's flattering (that people think I can surpass Federer and Nadal), obviously. But at the same time, it's still a very long way ahead of me. It does also put a certain level of responsibility to me as well, because I am aiming to do that.”
At the time of those comments, Djokovic owned 16 Slam titles; five months later he claimed a 17th at Australian Open 2020. Brimming with confidence and unbeatable in the first two months of that year, he seemed perfectly positioned to accumulate more.
A tough assignment
Had the season gone as many envisaged – Djokovic would sail through the US Open draw then beat a vulnerable Nadal on heavy clay in the Roland Garros final – then he and the Spaniard would own 19 each.
Instead, Djokovic remains on 17, with Nadal three trophies clear.

Assuming Nadal and Federer win no more Grand Slam trophies, the quickest way Djokovic could surpass them would be to sweep all four major titles in 2021 – the headiest of achievements.
A more likely scenario – given Nadal’s near-invincibility in Paris and the increasing impact of fast-rising stars like Dominic Thiem, Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas – would be that Djokovic gathers four more Slams over the next two or three years.
By that time, he would be around 36 years of age. And he might need more than four.
"Especially now, more or less everything is about Grand Slams in terms of how I see tennis and how I approach them because they matter the most."
Novak Djokovic
"When you start throwing out the numbers the Big Three have produced, it's absolutely mind-boggling. So I would say: does four (more major titles) seem insurmountable? Yes, it does. But on the other hand I'll say, he'll do that in a heartbeat,” former world No.15 Wally Masur said of Djokovic.
“Because it just seems to be what these players do. They just have this incredible knack of gathering majors.
“Novak is a superb athlete, he's a light frame. I assume he’s probably looked after himself pretty well and if he's got a couple of years left in him, he will win more Slams.
“Can he win four? Let's wait and see.”

Djokovic did acknowledge the added pressure he was placing on himself by declaring his desire to win more Grand Slam singles titles than anybody in men’s tennis history.
But according to former world No.4 Todd Martin, who once coached Djokovic, evading questions about his lofty goals would be “disingenuous”.
“It's out there,” Martin said. “I think it's good. It's probably healthy. I think it's probably freeing for him to be able to just say it out loud.”
Race continues at AO 2021
Martin, now the International Tennis Hall of Fame CEO, believes it simplistic to judge greatness purely on one metric such as the overall number of major singles trophies. The ongoing ‘GOAT debate’, he argues, involves a more holistic picture also including Masters 1000 titles, weeks at No.1, total tournaments won and head-to-head records.
However, he remains captivated, like many others, by the Big Three’s historic Grand Slam chase – something that will continue at AO 2021.
“Imagine in February if Novak leaves with another trophy from Melbourne. (The tally is) 20-20-18, it doesn't look that far away. Then all of a sudden you can start to imagine, wow, we might be at 21-20-19 by the end of the year. Or 20-20-20,” Martin said.
"I do look at May and June of 2021, and think Rafa's gonna be at least at 21.

"If you had told me in 2009-2010, when I was working with Novak, that Wimbledon was going to be a great place for him, I would have been skeptical. But he has figured out how to be a great player on every surface, at every event.
"When he's right, I look at him as being the best tennis player in the world. With the caveat that Rafa is an absolute beast on clay.”
In less than three weeks’ time, we will have a clearer picture of how the Grand Slam race could play out.
