Rublev/Khachanov Triumph In Madrid

Singles stars clinch first doubles title together
Long-time friends Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev captured their first tour-level doubles title together Saturday when they defeated seventh seeds Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 at the Mutua Madrid Open.

Competing in front of a lively crowd on Manolo Santana Stadium, the singles stars produced a strong serving performance to triumph after 71 minutes. They won 83 per cent (25/30) of their first-serve points and raced away in the Match Tie-break to seal victory.

Khachanov and Rublev showed grit throughout their run to the trophy, earning Match Tie-break wins in four of their five matches. They also defeated seeds Nikola Mektic/Mate Pavic and Marcelo Arevalo/Jean-Julien Rojer.

Khachanov and Rublev were competing in their third ATP Masters 1000 final, having advanced to the championship match in Miami in 2018 and Paris in 2019. With their victory, Rublev has now won four doubles trophies. It is Khachanov’s first tour-level doubles title.

Bopanna and Ebden were chasing their third tour-level title of the season together, having won in Doha and Indian Wells. The Indian-Australian tandem are first in the Pepperstone ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings.

More Stars To Watch: There are plenty of stars who can make a deep run in Rome, including Monte-Carlo champion Andrey Rublev and World No. 3 Daniil Medvedev. World No. 4 Ruud has won nine of his 10 titles on clay and is pursuing his first ATP Masters 1000 title. The Norwegian, who reached last year’s Roland Garros final, has made the semi-finals in his past two Rome appearances (2020 and 2022).

Madrid champions hold nerve for second-round spot
Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev competing in a Match Tie-break has only produced one outcome these past two weeks on the European clay.

So it was again on Thursday at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia, where the unseeded duo took down two-time champions Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah 4-6, 7-5, 10/7 in their first-round match at the ATP Masters 1000 in Rome.

Khachanov and Rublev clinched four of their five matches in Match Tie-breaks en route to their maiden Masters 1000 title last week at the Mutua Madrid Open, and the pair excelled when facing the now-familiar situation again against Cabal and Farah. The singles stars never fell behind in the decider as they wrapped a one-hour, 42-minute triumph at the Foro Italico.

Now 8-3 as a team for the 2023 season, long-time friends Khachanov and Rublev will take on fourth seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Jean-Julien Rojer or Jamie Murray and Michael Venus in the second round as they chase back-to-back Masters 1000 crowns.
