With just two weeks to go, the battle for the final three qualification spots at the Nitto ATP Finals continued to heat up at ATP 500 events in Vienna and Basel, where Jannik Sinner and Felix Auger-Aliassime triumphed.

Ninth (3,075 points) – Hubert Hurkacz
The Pole climbed two spots to ninth in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin after he reached the title match at the Swiss Indoors Basel. The 26-year-old earned three-set victories against Tallon Griekspoor and Ugo Humbert before losing against Auger-Aliassime in the title match. Hurkacz, who is aiming to make his second appearance at the Nitto ATP Finals, heads to Paris 215 points behind eighth-placed Holger Rune, who occupies the final qualification spot.

Sixth (3,885 points) – Stefanos Tsitsipas
The Greek consolidated his sixth-placed position after reaching the semi-finals at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna. Tsitsipas overcame Dominic Thiem before falling to Daniil Medvedev in the last four. The 25-year-old is 810 points clear of ninth-placed Hurkacz and can stamp his ticket for the Nitto ATP Finals at the Rolex Paris Masters this week. Tsitsipas has competed at the prestigious year-end for the past four years, winning the title in 2019.

Eighth (3,290 points) – Holger Rune
The 20-year-old gained a vital 180 points in Basel, where he reached the semi-finals at a tour-level event since June, when he advanced to the last four at The Queen’s Club. Rune is aiming to make his debut at the Nitto ATP Finals. This week he heads to Paris as the defending champion.

Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Jannik Sinner and Andrey Rublev have all qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals.

How Alcaraz's Paris Loss Gave Djokovic Control In Battle For Year-End No. 1

Carlos Alcaraz’s stunning opening-round loss at the Rolex Paris Masters on Tuesday had wider consequences than simply his elimination from the season's final ATP Masters 1000 event. With the defeat, the Spaniard’s chances of earning a second consecutive ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by Pepperstone honour dropped significantly.

Six-time Paris champion Novak Djokovic now has an opportunity to press his advantage this week. The Serbian leads the Spaniard by 500 points in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin and could extend his lead to 1,495 points by lifting the trophy in Bercy. The Live Race serves as a barometer for the year-end No. 1 battle.

A gap that wide would nearly put the battle out of reach for Alcaraz with only one more week in the regular season (he has not entered the ATP 250 events in Metz or Sofia, but could accept a wild card) and then the Nitto ATP Finals, where a maximum of 1,500 points are up for grabs.

Should Djokovic emerge victorious at the Rolex Paris Masters for the seventh time, he would be on the verge of extending his record of year-end No. 1 finishes to eight. The 36-year-old last accomplished the feat in 2021.

But if Djokovic suffers an early defeat, Alcaraz, who last year became the youngest ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by Pepperstone, would still have a chance to put pressure on his rival in Turin, home of the Nitto ATP Finals. Third-placed Daniil Medvedev is also still alive in the chase for year-end No. 1, although he is currently 1,755 points behind Djokovic in the Live Race.

Djokovic this week is competing for the first time since Davis Cup the week after he won the US Open. That time off provided Alcaraz an opportunity to make a move in the Live Race, but he has gone 5-3, losing in the semi-finals in Beijing, Round of 16 in Shanghai and the second round in Paris.

Djokovic will play Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry on Wednesday with the winner to play Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor for a place in the Paris quarter-finals.

Djokovic Clinches Record-Extending Eighth Year-End No. 1 Presented By Pepperstone

Serbian to reach 400 weeks at World No. 1
Novak Djokovic clinched his record-extending eighth ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by Pepperstone finish on Sunday when he defeated Holger Rune in his opening match at the Nitto ATP Finals.

After a back-and-forth battle for the honour with Carlos Alcaraz throughout the 2023 season, Djokovic has emerged on top. The Serbian also extended his record as oldest year-end No. 1 in Pepperstone ATP Rankings history. Two years ago he was the oldest to finish the season in top spot aged 34, and he has beaten his own mark by repeating the feat aged 36.


Djokovic is now two year-end No. 1 finishes clear of Pete Sampras, who is second on the historic list with six year-end No. 1 campaigns. The Serbian has earned the honour in eight of the past 13 seasons.

By clinching year-end No. 1, Djokovic will enjoy his record 400th week atop the Pepperstone ATP Rankings beginning 20 November.

Djokovic has spent 25 weeks in top spot in 2023. World No. 1 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings changed seven times this year between the Serbian and Alcaraz.

A winner of six titles so far this season — tied for the most on the ATP Tour with Alcaraz — Djokovic won three of the season’s four majors. He lifted the trophy at the Australian Open, Roland Garros and the US Open.

Now a 24-time major champion, Djokovic captured three Slams in a year for the fourth time in his career (also 2011, 2015 and 2021). He stands alone with the most major titles in the history of men’s tennis.

The 36-year-old triumphed in Cincinnati and Paris to add two more ATP Masters 1000 trophies to his collection. Djokovic has now won a record 40 titles at that elite level.
