World Tour Finals

Finałowy odcinek pasjonującego serialu o nazwie ATP rozegrany zostanie w Londynie. World Tour Finals to impreza o prestiżu podobnym turniejom Wielkiego Szlema, a wygrana w niej jest niebywale ważnym punktem w CV zawodowego tenisisty. Zanim przejdziemy to tegorocznej edycji turnieju, cofnijmy się na chwilę w czasie o 12 miesięcy.

Triumfatorem ubiegłorocznej edycji imprezy został Roger Federer. Szwajcar, pomimo rozstawienie z niskim jak na siebie numerem 4, przystępował do turnieju jako faworyt. Obrońca tytuły z sezonu 2010, wygrał turnieje w Bazylei i paryskiej hali Bercy i przystąpił do imprezy z mocnym postanowieniem pokazania, że pierwszy od lat sezon bez wygranego turnieju WS absolutnie nie skreśla go z walki o najwyższą stawkę.
Podział na grupy był następujący: Grupa A [1] Novak Djoković (SRB), [7] Tomas Berdych (CZE), [5] David Ferrer (ESP), [3] Andy Murray (GBR), grupa B [4] Roger Federer (SUI), Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA), [2] Rafael Nadal (ESP), [8] Mardy Fish (USA). Rywalizacja w grupie A miała nietypowy przebieg. Z turnieju wycofał się Murray, którego miejsce zajął Janko Tipsarevic, zaś wyczerpany najlepszym sezonem w karierze Djokovic, wypadł słabo i nie awansował do fazy pucharowej. Z grupy wyszli Ferrer i Berdych, którzy też nie błyszczeli formą i w półfinałach skazani byli na pożarcie w walce ze znakomicie dysponowanymi na tym etapie sezonu graczami z grupy B. Już w pierwszym meczu tej grupy doszło do kolejnego w sezonie pojedynku Federera z Tsongą, wygrał Szwajcar, ale tym razem przegrał seta. W kolejnym meczu spotkał się Nadalem. Mecz był oczekiwany jeszcze przed rozpoczęciem całych zawodów, ale tym razem nie doszło to dramatycznego widowiska, Federer zdeklasował słabo dysponowanego rywala. W ostatnim meczu grupowym obrońca tytułu w dość średni meczu wygrał z Fishem i z kompletem zwycięstw awansował do półfinału, razem z nim z grupy wyszedł Tsonga, po wygranych z Fishem i rozbitym psychicznie Nadalem. Obydwa półfinały miały dość jednostronny przebieg. Federer pewnie pokonał Ferrera, a Tsonga Berdycha.
W finale doszło więc do ostatecznej rozgrywki między Szwajcarem, a Francuzem. Federer zaczął mecz z wysokiego C, miał wyraźną przewagę i wydawało się, że pewnie zmierza po tytuł. Jednak, mimo piłek meczowych dla rywala, Tsonga wrócił do gry i wygrał drugiego seta. Jednak w trzeciej partii i całym meczu, lepszy okazał się Roger, dla którego była to rekordowa, piąta wygrana w kończącym sezon turnieju. W finale turnieju deblistów znalazła się polska para Fyrstenberg/Matkowski, niestety przegrali z parą Mirny/Nestor.

Ten sezon nie miał wyraźnego dominatora i widać to, gdy przychodzi mówić o szansach w podsumowującym go turnieju. Fakty są brutalne: Nadala nie ma, Federer od Cincinnati przestał grać w tenisa, Djokovic jest cały czas znakomity, ale bez ubiegłorocznego błysku, a Murray ciągle jest bardziej pytaniem, niż odpowiedzią. Tsonga od jakiegoś czasu nie błyszczy, Berdych też nie przekonuje, Tipsarevic w tym gronie wydaje się jednak dość przeciętny, Del Potro ma za sobą tenisowy maraton, jeden Ferrer wydaje się jak zawsze zwarty i gotowy. Na pewno z losowania zadowolony może być Federer, uniknął obu najgroźniejszych rywali i nawet w średniej formie, powinien jakoś wyjść grupy, reszta ma dość podobne szanse na awans, biorąc pod uwagę możliwe zmęczenie Del Potro i Ferrera. Grupa A jest zaś prawdziwą grupą śmierci i trudno jest snuć scenariusze, bo z jednej strony dobrze dysponowanie Djokovic i Murray powinni ze niej wyjść, z drugiej zaś, w tej fazie sezonu właśnie o prorokowanie czyjejś formy jest najtrudniej. W każdym razie, w tym roku ciężko mówić o mocnym faworycie, pewniaku. Turniej na chwilę obecną wydaje się zupełnie otwarty, tym większe emocje czekają sympatyków tenisa przez najbliższy tydzień

Federer, Djokovic & Nadal Qualify For 2012 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals

Roger Federer today returns to No. 1 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings for the first time in more than two years. And in a double reward for capturing his record-equalling seventh Wimbledon title on Sunday, Federer also has earned the right to play for his seventh Barclays ATP World Tour Finals crown at The O2 in London this November. Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have become the first three players to qualify for the eight-man season finale, to be held 5-12 November.

In joining Pete Sampras and William Renshaw as the only seven-time Wimbledon champions, Federer moves into a tie with Sampras for most weeks at No. 1. The 17-time Grand Slam champion today holds top spot for the 286th week and next Monday will set a new all-time record.

On reclaiming the No. 1 spot, Federer said: “I never stopped believing...it all worked out. I got great momentum, great confidence and it all came together. It's a magical moment for me. I was so close to the (Sampras) record two years ago and it is really amazing to be No. 1 again. I played and won a lot of tournaments since the US Open last year, I’m happy that all the hard work I have been putting in has paid off.”

One month shy of his 31st birthday, Federer is the second-oldest man to hold No. 1, behind Andre Agassi, who was 33 years and 131 days old. Federer last held the top spot on 31 May, 2010.

Federer, who has won a Grand Slam title in nine different years, holds a 75-point lead over Djokovic and is guaranteed to hold the No. 1 ranking heading into the London Olympic Games. Federer ended the 2011 season winning three consecutive titles, including the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, and has won a tour-best five titles in 2012, including his 20th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown in Madrid. Federer has compiled a 63-6 match record since last year’s US Open, going 17-0 at the end of 2011 and 46-6 this season.

ATP Executive Chairman & President, Brad Drewett, said, “On behalf of the ATP, I would like to congratulate Roger on winning an incredible seventh career Wimbledon title, and regaining the No.1 position in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, a reflection of his outstanding performances over the past 12 months. Roger is now assured of breaking Pete Sampras’ record of 286 weeks at No.1, the ultimate testament to his excellence and longevity at the top of the men’s game. Roger has done what many said he couldn’t do, and written yet another chapter in the history books.

Later this year, Federer will make his 11th consecutive appearance at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. He has won the title in 2003-04, ’06-’07 and the past two years.

Djokovic, who won the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in 2008, has qualified for the world’s biggest indoor tennis tournament for the sixth consecutive year after reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals, where he lost to Federer in four sets. Since capturing the Australian Open title in January, Djokovic has compiled a 34-7 match record including his third crown at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in Miami.

Nadal, who lifted a record seventh Roland Garros trophy last month and set a record with his 20th and 21st ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles in Monte-Carlo and Rome, has clinched his spot at an eighth straight Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. In 2010, he lost to Federer in the title match.

Defending Champions Mirnyi/Nestor Qualify For Barclays ATP World Tour Finals



Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor will return to The O2 in London this November to defend their Barclays ATP World Tour Finals title after becoming the first team to qualify for the prestigious season finale.

The No. 1 duo secured their spot in the eight-team field by reaching the quarter-finals at the Rogers Cup in Toronto with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Fabio Fognini and Juan Monaco on Thursday.

“I’m happy to be going back,” said Nestor. “Obviously I have a good partner. I’ve always had good partners to help me qualify. I really like going there. It’s such an amazing event, so we feel fortunate to qualify. It’s an amazing event to be a part of. We really enjoy playing in London and the arena. It’s such a nice arena to play in, the atmosphere is great.”

Mirnyi, 35, will be making his ninth appearance at the season finale, while the 39-year-old Nestor will be making his 14th. In addition to their victory last year, Mirnyi won the title in 2006 with Jonas Bjorkman and was a finalist in 2009 (w/Ram) and ‘10 (w/Bhupathi). Nestor triumphed in 2007 with long-time partner Mark Knowles following their two runner-up finishes in 1998 and 2006, and also lifted the trophy with Nenad Zimonjic in 2008 and ’10.

Mirnyi and Nestor have won four titles from six finals this season, highlighted by their successful title defence at Roland Garros. In May, they moved into a tie with each other for the World No. 1 ATP Doubles Ranking, replacing Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, who had shared the No. 1 individual spot for 90 consecutive weeks.

“This year Max and I are playing probably a little bit better than we were last year, so hopefully we can stay ahead of the Bryans, close to the Bryans, and then if it goes down to London, then it’ll be exciting to see who finishes No. 1,” said Nestor.

After playing two tournaments together in 2000, the Belarusian and Canadian launched their full-time partnership last year and won four titles.

The Barclays ATP World Tour Finals will be held from 5-12 November. Three singles players - Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal - have already qualified for the world’s biggest indoor tennis tournament.

Bryans Qualify For London; Save 1 M.P. In Toronto Final



Second seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan became the second team to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals after winning their fourth Rogers Cup title on Sunday. The American twins saved a match point against Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez to win their 21st ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown 6-1, 4-6, 12-10 in Toronto.

“That's a big goal for all the teams when they start the year to make it to the O2. It’s an incredible venue,” said Bob Bryan. “It’s a great stage for the doubles, probably the biggest stage of the year, and to qualify means a lot to us.”

The Bryans have won nine straight matches, following victory at the London 2012 Olympics where they completed a career Golden Slam. The two also lifted trophies at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, Sydney and Nice.

“It came down to the wire there at the end. We were down match point; could have gone either way,” said Mike Bryan. “Maybe we're still riding high from the Olympics and we feel good. We always play better when we're happy. Right now we feel like even though it gets sticky and tough, we've been winning all the big points for the last couple weeks; we did the same today.”

Needing to pull double duty after rain postponed the semi-finals on Saturday, the Bryans first defeated No. 5 seeds Jurgen Melzer and Leander Paes to move through to the final, winning 87 per cent of their service points to wrap up victory in just 49 minutes.

In the final, the Bryans relinquished a set-and-a-break lead and a 7-4 advantage in the Match Tie-break to Granollers and Lopez. The Spaniards held match point at 9-8 and saved one of their own at 9-10 before losing the final two points.

“We had to switch up our strategy a little bit towards the end, but I thought we played a pretty good match,” Bob Bryan said. “We had the momentum big time at the beginning of the match. Could have been a 40 minute match but they got back in it. You've got to give them a lot of credit for fighting and making that such an entertaining match.”

Granollers and Lopez were bidding to win their second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event of the season, having triumphed in Rome (d. Kubot/Tipsarevic). Earlier, they edged fourth seeds Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau 7-6(10), 7-5 in one hour and 54 minutes.

Lindstedt/Tecau Qualify For London With First Masters 1000 Title



Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau clinched their berth at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals after winning their team’s first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title on Sunday at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. The fourth seeds defeated No. 6 seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna 6-4, 6-4.

Lindstedt and Tecau are the third team to qualify for the prestigious circuit finale, to be held from 5-12 November at The O2 in London, joining Bob Bryan/Mike Bryan and Max Mirnyi/Daniel Nestor. The third-year duo made their Barclays ATP World Tour Finals debut last year.

"To be qualified this early in the season is new for both of us," said Lindstedt. "It’s an amazing feeling. It’s a testament to how great our season’s been and we’re over the moon right now. The good thing is it gives us time to prepare and relax for that tournament. It’s a great feeling."

Tecau added: "Last year we only qualified two weeks before. This year has been a lot more consistent for us, so we were really looking forward to being there. Our schedule will be focussed towards that week so that’s the benefit for knowing this early in the year that you’ve qualified, so it’s an amazing feeling."

In Sunday’s final, the Swedish-Romanian pairing capitalised on thee of their nine break points before closing out the 67-minute win on serve. They had advanced to their second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final with victory over the top-ranked Bryans in the semi-finals.

"I don't think the monkey can be any bigger that just got off my back, of our backs," said Lindstedt. "We finally get the big one that we been fighting for for so long. To get that and fight through and beat such good teams on the way and you come out on top, it's an indescribable feeling."

Lindstedt and Tecau were contesting their fourth final from their past five tournaments. They won titles on grass in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and on clay in Bastad, were finalists at Wimbledon (l. to Marray/Nielsen) and reached the semi-finals last week in Toronto. They have compiled a 19-2 mark during that stretch, taking their season record to 41-15.

"It's been a successful summer, very consistent on the clay courts, on the grass, and now here hard courts in Toronto and Cincinnati, so we're really confident, but we have to keep our feet on the ground and really work to get adjusted to the courts in New York," said Tecau. MURRAY SET TO RETURN TO LONDON


Andy Murray will be making his fifth appearance
at the prestigious circuit finale.

2012 Olympic gold medalist Andy Murray will return to London this November to compete at the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, held at The O2 from 5-12 November.

Murray’s win over Marin Cilic on Wednesday to reach the US Open semi-finals guaranteed the Brit his place among the world’s top eight players at the season-ending tournament in London. It will be the first time that Murray returns to compete in the UK following his remarkable gold medal run at the Olympic Games in August.

Murray, who also reached this year’s Wimbledon final, has thrived whilst competing in London in 2012, and can now look ahead to taking on the world’s best in November at The O2. The Brit also captured the title at the Brisbane International in Australia in January, as well as reaching finals at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships in Dubai and the Sony Open Tennis in Miami.

“It’s great to have qualified again for London. I’ve played some of my best tennis this year on home soil, so hopefully I can also have a good run at The O2 in November. The atmosphere and the support I’ve had there has always been incredible,” said the Brit.

Murray is the fourth singles player to qualify for the season-ending finale, joining Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the player field in London. Four singles spots still remain up for grabs, with the likes of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, David Ferrer, Juan Martin Del Potro and Tomas Berdych all in contention to join the top four in London.

World Tour Finals.

Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek have become the fourth doubles team to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London next month.

The Indian-Czech team clinched their first team berth at the prestigious season-ending championship, held at The O2 from 5-12 November, as a result of reaching the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships title match in Tokyo on Saturday.

Paes, 39, has qualified for the 13th time. He is a four-time former runner-up in 1997, 1999, 2000 (all w/Bhupathi) and 2005 (w/Zimonjic).

The 33-year-old Stepanek will be making his debut.

This year, Paes and Stepanek won the Australian Open title (d. Bryans), ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Miami (d. Mirnyi-Nestor) and were runners up at the US Open (l. to Bryans).

finale for a fourth time.

Spaniard David Ferrer and Wimbledon doubles champions Jonathan Marray and Frederik Nielsen have qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, to be held at The O2 in London from 5-12 November, leaving just three singles and three doubles berths up for grabs with three weeks remaining in the regular ATP World Tour season.

World No. 5 Ferrer returns to the season-ending championships for a third straight year and a fourth time overall. He reached the final on his debut in 2007 at Shanghai, finishing runner-up to Roger Federer. This season, the 30-year-old Valencia native has won a career-high five titles on three different surfaces. He opened his 2012 campaign with the hard-court title at the Heineken Open in Auckland, triumphed on grass at the UNICEF Open in 's-Hertogenbosch, and won the clay-court tournaments at the Copa Claro in Buenos Aires, Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco and the SkiStar Swedish Open in Bastad.

“I am very happy because to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals is a great achievement,” said Ferrer. “It’s always one of my goals at the beginning of each year. I look forward to coming back to The O2 in London to play against the best players in the world in November. The atmosphere in the stadium is incredible there.”

Marray and Nielsen clinched their first qualification to the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals by virtue of their Grand Slam victory and guaranteed Top 20 finish in the Doubles Team Race to London. The British-Danish duo stunned four seeded tandems, including defending champions Bob and Mike Bryan in the semi-finals, to claim the Wimbledon crown in their first tour-level appearance as a team. Marray, 31, became the first homegrown player to triumph in the doubles final at the All England Club since 1936, while the 29-year-old Nielsen became the first Danish man to win a Grand Slam title.

“To be able to cap off the season by competing against the world’s best doubles teams in front of a home crowd at The O2 in November will be incredible,” said Marray. “We had a great run at Wimbledon this summer, so hopefully we can reproduce some of that form in London this November.”

Nielsen said, “It will be amazing to get the experience of playing at The O2. It’s an unbelievable set-up, and an event I never thought I was going to be a part of as a player. So I will enjoy every second and can't wait to get started.”

Brad Drewett added, “With their doubles win at Wimbledon this year, Jonathan Marray and Frederik Nielsen produced one of the great stories of the tennis summer. Raonic, Isner, Cilic - wszyscy daleko i za słaba forma. Reszta to już czysta matematyka. Jedynym, które ma realne szanse wydaje się być Gasquet,ale: po pierwsze, po Bangkoku forma bardzo mu spadła, po drugie, musiałby mimo wszystko osiągnąć bardzo konkretne wyniki w obu pozostających przed nim turniejach (powiedzmy F Bazylei i półfinał Paryża) przy możliwie najszybszych wylotach Janka (jakaś 1-2 runda w obu). Należy przy tym pamiętać, że Gasquet nie jest zgłoszony do żadnego z rozgrywanych w tym tygodniu turniejów a Janko jest rozstawiony z 2. w Wiedniu.
