The first leaves of autumn are falling on the pavements of Paris, and the French capital is preparing to host the 33rd Rolex Paris Masters. From 27 October to 4 November the Accor Hotel Arena will welcome the world’s best players as they bid to lift the Arbre de Fanti, the legendary trophy awarded to the winner. Here are some reasons why this essential date on the Parisian autumn calendar is not to be missed.
Suspense and high stakes guaranteed
The final Masters 1000 event of the season, the Rolex Paris Masters throws up its fair share of surprises every year. Regarded by some as the last big tournament of the season, it provides players with an opportunity to improve their end-of-year ranking, while also offering some of them the chance to secure a place at the ATP Finals in London. That is what Jack Sock managed to do last year in putting his name on the trophy for the first time.
Several players are jostling for position in the world’s top eight this year. With just five weeks to go before London, only Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro have booked their tickets to the British capital. Behind those four, however, there is still everything to play for, with Alexander Zverev (fifth in the ATP Race to London on 4,410 points ), Marin Cilic, Dominic Thiem, Kevin Anderson, John Isner, Kei Nishikori, Fabio Fognini, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Pablo Carreño Busta and Borna Coric all entertaining hopes of making it to London. Make no mistake, there will be no shortage of intensity in Paris.
Aside from the Race to London, the battle for the end-of-year No1 world ranking will also add plenty of spice to the season’s closing events.
Rafael Nadal will be there
With Novak Djokovic snapping at his heels, Rafael Nadal is planning to play in Paris, as his uncle Toni recently commented. Absent from the competitive arena since his right knee forced him to retire during his US Open semi-final, the man from Mallorca will be keen to defend his world No1 ranking in the city that has meant most to him in his career. A runner-up here in 2007, Nadal is gunning for one of the three Masters 1000 titles still to elude him.
A chance to get close to the players
Don’t worry if you weren’t lucky enough to be one of the children selected as player escorts for the singles matches on Centre Court - you’ll still have every opportunity to get close to your favourite players. As was the case last year, a photoshoot area will be set up in the gallery at the Accor Hotel Arena, and lots of players from the main draw will be passing by. Don’t miss them.
Catch one of the Head tennis balls launched into the crowd every day and you’ll have the chance to go down to the court at the end of the fourth match of each day to have a knock-up with one of the players. Some lucky spectators can get even closer to the action thanks to the “Pass augmenté”, which gives them a courtside seat or have the chance to enjoy cosy chats on the sofas of the Accor Hotels Living Room Experience.
There’s more to the Rolex Paris Masters than just tennis
While Paris is guaranteed to blow you away with its architecture, style and cuisine, the entertainment laid on at the Rolex Paris Masters is also sure to captivate. The action starts well before the matches get under way, with the famous pre-tournament player presentation show, which has been revamped this year.
The hexagonal tunnel the players walk through on leaving the locker room remains in place, however, while the lights show that follows their arrival on the court will pay tribute to the city of Paris by drawing a parallel between its streets and avenues and the lines on the court, all in an atmosphere that will be as electric as ever. It’s the perfect way to set the stage for some high-quality tennis.
