Chinese Teens Announce Arrival In Local Challengers

With a new crop of ATP Challenger Tour events being held throughout China this year, these tournaments have been a chance for some of the country’s youngest stars to showcase their best tennis.

At this week’s $125,000 ATP Challenger Tour event in Qingdao, 18 year old Rigele Te prevailed in the first round over fellow Chinese player Yecong He to win his second main draw match in a Challenger. His first main draw Challenger win came last week at the $125,000 Challenger in Chengdu, where he was also a wild card.

Although Te lost in the second round in Qingdao on Thursday to Danilo Petrovic of Serbia, the youngest player on the Chinese National team said the past two weeks have been an invaluable experience for him.

“To be able to win matches in Challengers for the first time is exciting,” said Te. “I know I still have a long way to go. I just need to play more matches, gain more experience and boost my confidence.”

Another player taking his first steps this year on the ATP Challenger Tour year is 16 year old Yibing Wu. Currently ranked No. 19 in the ITF Junior Rankings, he made his Challenger main draw debut this week in Qingdao, where he lost to former World No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia in straight sets.

“I was very excited when the draw came out and to have the chance to play Janko. I really enjoyed it. I thought I played aggressive tennis in the first few games, but couldn’t keep up with him because he is so solid,” said Wu. “The pro players take everything very seriously. I learned a lot from that.”

Te and Wu’s appearances in Qingdao also come on the heels of 18 year old Fanjing Sun coming through qualifying to reach the quarter-finals last week in Chengdu. All three are aiming to get into the Top 100 of the Emirates ATP Rankings, but said they want to be part of a contingent of top Chinese players.

“I hope when I reach this goal,” said Wu, “We already have Top 100 players from China.”

US Open 2017: Wu Yibing wins boys' singles and doubles title, says Chinese tennis is on the rise

New York: Wu Yibing served notice to the world that Chinese men's tennis is on the rise Sunday after capturing a milestone Grand Slam boys singles title at the US Open.

The 17-year-old second seed from Hangzhou became China's first boys Slam singles champion by defeating Argentina's top-seeded Axel Geller 6-4, 6-4.

"I think this is showing ourselves and showing the world Chinese boys can be good and better -- and Chinese men."

Wu made his best prior Grand Slam singles run into this year's Australian Open semi-finals and also reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

In doubles, Wu joined with Taiwan's Hsu Yu-Hsiou to become the first all-Asian pair to capture the US Open boys doubles crown, defeating Japan's Toru Horie and Yuta Shimizu 6-4, 5-7, 11-9.

"It's a really happy (feeling) to win the doubles and singles here," Wu said.

"And thank you to all the Chinese people here. It's for China. It's for me."

Wu squandered six championship points in the eighth game of the second set before taking the title on his seventh opportunity when Geller swatted a forehand wide after 80 minutes.

"That was tough. My hand was shaking," Wu said. "The only thing I can try to do is recover after that. I think I do well in the second service game."

The doubles took its toll on Wu during the fortnight as well.

"I'm a little bit tired from the doubles," Wu said. "I just hoped to do my best. I just (attacked) the return and tried to do more rallies. I'm trying to give him pressure and try to cover with my volley."

The only other Asian player to take the US Open boys title was India's Leander Paes in 1991.

Asked about his career goals, Wu didn't jump into an obvious reply about becoming Asia's first men's singles Grand Slam champion.

"Top 100," he said. "Yes, the first goal. Easy."

Asia's nearest men's singles Grand Slam title hope was 2014 US Open runner-up Kei Nishikori of Japan.

Past US Open boys champions who won Grand Slam singles titles include Australia's Pat Cash, Sweden's Stefan Edberg, American Andy Roddick and Britain's Andy Murray.

Wu trains in China for Asian events and in Spain for European events. He heads back to his homeland Monday for a Challenger event.

"I play against second seed I think," Wu said. "I'll try my best."

Geller, who plans to attend Stanford University, also lost in this year's Wimbledon boys final.

Hmm, po tym skrócie nie określiłbym ich jako wyrazistych tenisistów. Jednak obydwaj Kanadyjczycy mają ciekawsze style.

Nawet dobrze przerzucał, zobaczymy co z Niego będzie. Zawsze czekam na zawodników z Azji, więc ten sukces na USO w jakimś sensie mnie cieszy. Teraz na pewno otrzyma od rządu odpowiednie środki na rozwój, byle Go tylko nie zajechali (Li bardzo długo musiała grać w krajowych mistrzostwach i łączyć to z innymi występami, a lepiej żeby chłopak ogrywał się na nieco wyższym poziomie). By pchanie tenisa do Chin nabrało sensu muszą mieć swoją gwiazdę, może to będzie właśnie ten junior. W każdym razie życzę wszystkiego dobrego.

Na początek totalny odlot, bo Wu to chłopak znajdujący się pod koniec piątej setki rankingu. Dlaczego więc zdecydowaliśmy się go wyróżnić? Bo Chińczyk to świeżo upieczony mistrz juniorskiego US Open w singlu i deblu. Dosyć wysoki jak na Azjatę (183 cm), dobrze czujący się przy siatce.

Oczywiście granie z seniorami to zdecydowanie inna para kaloszy, ale Wu zdaje się nic sobie z tego nie robi. W sierpniu dotarł bowiem do półfinału Challengera w Chengdu, gdzie odpadł z późniejszym zwycięzcą, stałym bywalcem pierwszej setki rankingu, Yen-hsun Lu. Ten sam rezultat osiągnął w obecnie trwającym turnieju tej samej rangi w Szanghaju, w którym ograł już m.in. Petera Polansky’ego czy Hirokiego Moriyę. Umieszczamy go trochę w ramach ciekawostki, ale z pewnością warto dalej obserwować jego rozwój.

Yibing Rides Winning Wave Into First Final

Chinese teenager carries juniors success from New York to Shanghai
Success is coming sooner than Wu Yibing expected. The 17-year-old Chinese prospect only won the US Open junior singles and doubles titles less than two weeks ago in New York.

Now he stands one match away from landing his maiden ATP Challenger Tour title on home soil in Shanghai. Top seed, Chinese Taipei’s Yen-Hsun Lu, is his final hurdle.

And Wu realises how great a hurdle that is, with Lu’s 29-title haul making him the all-time Challenger leader. Lu holds a 20-3 record in Challenger finals since 2008.

“I played him last month in the Chengdu semi-finals, lost to him in the final set,” Wu said. “I know he is better than me, especially from the baseline but in that match, my serve and return were performing really well. I will get my mind prepared for the final, focus on my game. If he thinks he needs to change things against me, maybe that will be my chance.”

As the youngest Asian-born Challenger finalist since Kei Nishikori in 2007 (Carson, USA), Wu is already wary of expectations mounting. This week he took down second-seeded Canadian Peter Polansky and Japan’s No. 5 seed Hiroki Moriya en route to the semi-finals where he defeated experienced German Matthias Bachinger 7-5, 7-5 for a place in the final.

“I am more focused on tennis now. That’s why I am playing better than before,” he said. “I also can feel the support from all the fans, lots of them come here to cheer for me.

“That gave me extra strength to do better. To be honest, this is the toughest day for me since I got back to China [from the United States]. I am still fighting the jet leg, can barely sleep at night, but luckily it didn’t affect my matches.”

Win or lose Sunday’s final, Wu is set to make his ATP World Tour debut in this month's Chengdu Open. And as the best-finishing Chinese player in the Shanghai Challenger he has earned a wild card into the Shanghai Rolex Masters.

“I am very excited to play in Chengdu,” he said. “That will be my first ATP World Tour main draw match, but right now I will focus on [the] final.”

A battle of 17-year-old #NextGenATP vs. 34-year-old veteran, Wu is half Lu's age. It is the biggest age difference in a Challenger final since May 2016, when Karen Khachanov (19) beat Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo (38) in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
At 17 years, 11 months, Wu is the youngest Asian-born Challenger finalist since Kei Nishikori in 2007 (Carson, USA). Nishikori was six months younger at the time of his first final.
Wu is bidding to become the youngest Asian-born Challenger titleist since 17-year-old Evgeny Korolev, of Kazakhstan, won in Aachen, Germany, in 2005.
Wu is the fourth different player aged 17 and under to reach a Challenger final this year, joining Canadians Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime and Spain's Nicola Kuhn. All three won titles.
Wu is bidding to become the fourth player in the past five years to win a junior Grand Slam title and a Challenger crown in the same season. Nick Kyrgios did it in 2013, Alexander Zverev in 2014 and Taylor Fritz in 2015.
While Wu will be making his debut in a Challenger final, Lu is appearing in an unprecedented 46th. He is seeking to become the first player in Challenger history to win 30 titles.
